I fear for the survival of the human race, and even life on Earth, because of the rampant expansion of conflict in the world. It isn’t just the faraway wars in failed republics that I am worried about. The very fabric of society is unraveling in ways that were unthoughtof in my childhood. When I was a child, everyone worried that the Russians or the Chinese would push the nuclear button. Now we have to worry about some home grown terrorist pushing the button in our own country.
Don’t bet me wrong. I am firmly Christian and I am aware of all the scriptural predictions about the end of the world. I am also aware of the caveats in Scripture against both complacency and trying to predict to day and the time of the end. So I have a stake in trying to maintain human existence until the Lord returns.
What are the solutions? I am so fed up with the people who want to fight about anything and everything that I have begun to think the best hope for humanity is to get as many people who don’t hate as possible into some off-world colony. We already have one billionaire preparing to send a colony to Mars and commercial consortia that are preparing to do industrial and mining operations in space. There are other things being built by private business to support space travel by private persons, such as Bigelow Aerospace’s hotel in orbit, sort of an extra-terrestrial Budget Suites.
President Reagan said he wanted a base on the moon to act as a stepping stone to Mars exploration. President Clinton wanted to scrap the way stop and go strait to Mars. President Obama practically gave up on government-sponsored human exploration of space. Now President Trump is putting forth a budget plan that includes money for more human exploration. Is that the answer?
We can do this without government intervention and inefficiency. If enough people pitch in there is enough money wasted every month to fund an orbital habitat or a space based factory. Business operates for profit. We need a non-profit foundation to move humanity into space. This is the final migration of humanity. Our entire history has lead up to it. Would you support a private space colony, even if you couldn't go?
